This article covers the request limits that apply to Organization API Tokens and how to design an integration that stays well within them.

Organization API Token limits

Organization API Tokens are rate limited:

Limit Value
Sustained average 20 requests per minute
Burst allowance Up to 50 requests per minute

These limits apply to Organization API Tokens, which are used for organization-scoped integrations built via the Integrations page. See Authentication & API tokens for how these tokens differ from Instance API Tokens.

Handling 429 responses

If your integration exceeds the rate limit, requests are throttled with an HTTP 429 Too Many Requests response. When you encounter one:

  • Stop retrying immediately — don't loop on the same request.
  • Back off before retrying, ideally with an increasing delay (exponential backoff) rather than a fixed short interval.
  • Spread requests out over time instead of firing them in quick succession, so you stay under the sustained 20 requests/minute average rather than relying on the burst allowance.

Retrying immediately in a tight loop after a 429 makes the problem worse — it keeps you over the limit and delays recovery for the rest of your integration.

Designing a polite integration

  • Cache room data. A room stays usable and its configuration unchanged from the moment it's created until it's closed — there's rarely a reason to re-fetch it on a tight timer. Store the fields you need locally and only re-fetch when you have a reason to believe something changed.
  • Avoid polling for status changes. If you're repeatedly calling GET /api/rooms or GET /api/rooms/{token} to detect when something happens, switch to webhooks instead — they notify you as events occur, without consuming your request budget.
  • Fetch efficiently when you do list rooms. Use pagination correctly (see Errors & pagination) rather than requesting every page in a burst.

If your integration currently polls the Video API on a timer to detect changes, moving to webhooks is usually the simplest way to both reduce your request volume and get faster updates.
