Every room moves through a small set of statuses from creation to closing — this article explains what each one means and what controls the timing around it.

Room statuses

A room's status is one of four values:

Status Meaning
active The default status right after creation. The room exists and can be joined, but the call hasn't started yet.
started The call is underway — for example, once a participant has joined. started_at is recorded.
ended The call has finished. By default, a room automatically moves to ended once all participants have left the call, and ended_at is recorded.
closed The room has been closed and can no longer be accessed at all. closed_at is recorded. See Closing a room below.

A room is usable from the moment it's created until it's closed — there's no restriction based on scheduled_at or the current status. See Rooms endpoints for the full field reference.

Permanent rooms are the exception to the automatic ended transition above — see Additional participants & permanent rooms.

Scheduled time and duration

scheduled_at and meeting_duration, set when creating or updating a room, are informational only:

  • scheduled_at is used to display the time remaining until the meeting starts. It has no technical effect on whether the room can be joined.
  • meeting_duration is the expected duration of the meeting, in minutes, shown alongside scheduled_at.

A room isn't locked to its scheduled_at time — participants can join as soon as the room exists, and it stays usable until it's closed or deleted, regardless of how much time has passed since (or until) that timestamp.

Closing a room

Closes a room. A closed room can not be accessed anymore.

A successful request returns 204 No Content.

Closing is final and immediate — there's no way to reopen a closed room through the API. If the call needs to continue, create a new room instead.

Automatic cleanup

Rooms can also be closed automatically by a scheduled cleanup job: it runs every 12 hours and closes any room whose scheduled_at is more than 24 hours in the past.

Whether automatic cleanup runs for your tenant depends on your MeetOne plan/setup — contact support if you'd like it enabled or adjusted. Explicitly closing rooms via the /close endpoint once you know a call has ended is recommended regardless, rather than relying on cleanup alone.

Permanent rooms are excluded from this cleanup job entirely — see Additional participants & permanent rooms.

Redirects after the call

return_url and host_return_url control where participants land after leaving the room:

  • return_url — where guests (and the host, unless host_return_url is set) are redirected after leaving. Uses a tenant-wide default if not provided on creation.
  • host_return_url — where the host specifically is redirected after leaving. Falls back to return_url if not set.

Both can be set when creating or updating a room.
