If your organization is based in Austria, we need your Austrian UID number (your VAT ID) for your invoice. This article explains what we need it for and how to get one if you don't have one yet — even if your healthcare profession does not charge VAT.
Why MeetOne needs your UID number
MeetOne is a German company. We invoice organizations in other EU countries without German VAT: the reverse charge procedure applies, so the tax liability passes to you as the recipient.
Your UID number is needed for this for three reasons:
- It shows that you are buying the service as a business.
- It must appear on the invoice together with our own number.
- We include it in our EC Sales List report to the tax authorities.
That is why the VAT ID field is mandatory for organizations in Austria. Without the number, you cannot save your billing details or book a plan.
Do you already have a UID number?
In Austria, businesses with VAT-liable services receive a UID number from the tax office automatically. Healthcare professions are often different: if you provide only exempt services, such as medical treatment, you get one only on application. The same applies to small businesses.
An Austrian UID number starts with ATU, followed by eight digits. It is not the same as your tax number. If you are unsure whether you have already been assigned one, ask your tax advisor or your tax office.
How to apply for a UID number
- Download form U15 (application for a UID number). You can find it on the UID number page of the Austrian business service portal (in German).
- Fill in the form and state as your reason that you buy services from another EU country.
- Submit the application to your tax office. Your tax advisor can also do this for you.
- The tax office informs you of the number by official notice.
You could word your reason like this:
Ich beziehe laufend Dienstleistungen eines Unternehmens aus Deutschland (MeetOne, Software für Videotermine), für die die Steuerschuld auf mich übergeht.
(In English: I regularly buy services from a company in Germany — MeetOne, software for video appointments — for which the tax liability passes to me.)
Do not give the invoice alone as your reason. You need to show credibly that you need the number for services within the EU. The tax office does not issue a UID number purely for invoicing purposes.
You cannot book a plan without a UID number, so apply in good time.
Enter your UID number in MeetOne
- Open Organization > Billing.
- Select Austria under Country and enter your number in the VAT ID field.
- Save with Update data.
What this means for your VAT
An invoice without VAT does not mean that no VAT is due. You calculate the Austrian VAT yourself, usually 20% of the net amount, report it to your tax office and pay it there.
If you provide only exempt services, you usually cannot deduct this tax as input VAT. It is then part of your costs. This also applies to small businesses.
This information does not replace tax advice. Your tax advisor can best clarify how and when to report the tax in your case.
Organizations in other countries
For all other EU countries and for organizations outside the EU, see VAT ID for organizations in the EU.
Troubleshooting
- I only have a tax number. A tax number does not replace the UID number. Apply for a UID number as described above.
- My number ends in -EX. This is a small business identification number, not a UID number. Apply for a UID number as well.
- We have several locations. A business generally has only one UID number. Enter the same number for each location.
