If your organization is based in an EU country outside Germany, we need your VAT identification number (VAT ID) for your invoice. This article explains what we need it for, what it is called in your country and what to do if you don't have one yet.

Why MeetOne needs your VAT ID

MeetOne is a German company. We invoice organizations in other EU countries without German VAT: the reverse charge procedure applies, so the tax liability passes to you as the recipient.

Your VAT ID is needed for this for three reasons:

  • It shows that you are buying the service as a business.
  • It must appear on the invoice together with our own number.
  • We include it in our EC Sales List report to the tax authorities.

That is why the VAT ID field is mandatory for organizations in other EU countries. Without the number, you cannot save your billing details or book a plan.

What the number is called in your country

The number has a different name in each country, but it always starts with a country code. Enter it with this code.

Country Usual name Starts with
Austria UID-Nummer ATU
Belgium BTW-nr / n° TVA BE
Bulgaria ДДС номер BG
Croatia PDV-ID HR
Cyprus ΦΠΑ CY
Czechia DIČ CZ
Denmark CVR-nummer / Momsnummer DK
Estonia KMKR EE
Finland ALV-numero FI
France N° TVA intracommunautaire FR
Greece ΑΦΜ / ΦΠΑ EL

Malta VAT number MT
Netherlands Btw-nummer NL
Poland NIP PL
Portugal NIF / NIPC PT
Romania CIF RO
Slovakia IČ DPH SK

Spain NIF ES
Sweden Momsnummer SE

For Greece the code is EL, not GR. The Netherlands and some other countries have further tax or register numbers alongside this one. We need the number used for business within the EU.

If you don't have a VAT ID yet

Organizations that do not charge VAT often don't have a number yet. This applies, for example, to healthcare professions with exempt services and to small businesses.

If you buy services from another EU country and owe the tax on them yourself, EU countries must register you for VAT. So you can get a number even if you do not charge VAT yourself. The application process varies by country. Contact your tax advisor or your tax office and give buying services from Germany as your reason.

For Austria, we describe the application step by step in Austrian UID number for your MeetOne invoice.

You cannot book a plan without a number, so apply in good time.

Enter your VAT ID in MeetOne

  1. Open Organization > Billing.
  2. Select your country under Country and enter your number in the VAT ID field.
  3. Save with Update data.

What this means for your VAT

An invoice without VAT does not mean that no VAT is due. You calculate your country's VAT yourself, report it to your tax office and pay it there.

If you provide only exempt services, you usually cannot deduct this tax as input VAT. It is then part of your costs.

This information does not replace tax advice. Your tax advisor can best clarify how and when to report the tax in your case.

Organizations outside the EU

If your organization is based outside the EU, for example in Switzerland, we do not need a VAT ID. We invoice you without German VAT.

Troubleshooting

  • I only have a tax number. A national tax number is not the same as the VAT ID in every country. If in doubt, ask your tax advisor or your tax office.
  • Is my number valid for business within the EU? You can check it in the European Commission's VIES system. If the number cannot be found there, contact your tax office.
