With the whiteboard you draw and write on a shared surface during a video appointment, for example to sketch out a process or illustrate something. Everyone in the call watches live.

Prerequisites

  • The whiteboard must be enabled for your organization, which means it is included in your plan. If it is not, contact your organization's administrator or our support.
  • Enable whiteboard must be switched on in the appointment's room configuration – it is by default when you create an appointment. See Configure the room for a video appointment.
  • You joined the call as the host. Only you can open the whiteboard.
  • A wide enough browser window. On narrow screens, such as a smartphone, the button is hidden.

How to open the whiteboard

  1. During the call, click Start whiteboard in the toolbar. The button sits next to Share screen.
  2. The whiteboard appears in the middle of the call, and the videos move into a column on the right.
  3. Draw, write or add shapes. Everyone in the call sees your changes right away.
  4. Click Stop whiteboard to close the whiteboard for everyone.

The first time you open it, your browser loads the whiteboard. On a slow connection this can take a moment.

What participants see

  • The participant and any additional participants see the whiteboard as soon as you open it. They can move and zoom their view, but they cannot draw or write.
  • Your own view is not shared. If you have zoomed out far or scrolled somewhere else, tell participants where to look.
  • Anyone who joins later or is admitted from the waiting room sees the whiteboard as it currently is.

Good to know

  • The content is not saved. If you stop the whiteboard, reload the page or leave the call, the drawing is lost. A whiteboard you start again is empty.
  • The whiteboard and screen sharing exclude each other. While the whiteboard is open, nobody in the call can share their screen. If someone is sharing their screen, Start whiteboard only comes back once the share has ended.
  • Images and files cannot be added. The whiteboard is for drawing and writing. Exchange files through the chat.
  • The whiteboard shows a "made with tldraw" notice. tldraw is the drawing software the whiteboard is built on.

Common problems

  • The "Start whiteboard" button is missing. Check whether someone is sharing their screen and whether your browser window is wide enough. If the button is still missing, the whiteboard is not included in your plan or is switched off for this appointment.
  • "The whiteboard could not be opened" appears. Check your internet connection, reload the page and start the whiteboard again.
  • "This drawing is too large to share" appears. The drawing has grown too large to send to participants in full, and they may no longer see its current state. Stop the whiteboard and start a new one.
